Smog & emissions FAQs.
Practical answers for San Luis Obispo drivers planning an inspection.
Requirements depend on your vehicle and registration situation. Have your DMV notice available when you contact us.
How much does a smog check cost in San Luis Obispo?
Call CAR for current pricing for your vehicle. Ask for the total, including any applicable certificate fee, and whether diagnostic work or a retest would be a separate charge.
Can my car pass with the check engine light on?
An illuminated check engine light prevents a passing Smog Check. Start with a diagnosis before scheduling the inspection. CAR can help you understand the next step.
What if I recently replaced my battery or cleared a code?
Tell us before your visit. Either can reset emissions readiness monitors. The vehicle may need a manufacturer-specific drive cycle before testing; a fixed mileage or a quick trip is not a guarantee of readiness.
Do I need a STAR smog check?
Check your DMV notice. If it specifies a STAR station, that requirement applies to your inspection. Call CAR before booking to confirm that the shop can handle your vehicle and the required inspection type.
Do hybrids and electric cars need smog testing?
Hybrids can require a Smog Check, subject to California’s applicable exemptions. Fully electric vehicles are exempt. Tell us your vehicle’s year, make, model, and fuel type when you contact the shop.
What happens if my vehicle fails?
CAR performs smog-related repairs for vehicles that have failed a smog test. Bring your inspection report so we can review the findings, diagnose the problem, and explain the recommended repairs before you authorize service.
How long should I plan for the appointment?
Ask the team for a time estimate when booking. Timing depends on the vehicle, inspection requirements, shop schedule, and whether diagnosis or repairs are needed.
Will passing the smog test renew my registration?
No. The inspection station sends a passing certificate to DMV electronically, but you still need to complete your registration renewal and pay any fees due.
Your next smog check starts here.
